The Harlin Museum’s 2019 High School Art Show Competition is sponsored and hosted by the James P. Harlin Museum Foundation Board members.  The show is open to the public during regular museum business hours between the dates of Friday, February 1st – Sunday, February 23rd, 2019.

Join us on Thursday afternoons for the Open Pallet with Friends program. which invites artists to come paint, create, and socialize in the lower-level classroom space of the Hathcock Gallery. Come encourage the artist in you to play!

Calling all digital artists!

The Harlin Museum, along with the show’s sponsor, SMS Technologies, invites artists to enter our 2019 Digital Art Show Competition, titled “ANother WorLD,” on display at the museum, March 1st – 24th.

The competition is open to all types of digital artists, that is, any artist who utilizes digital technology as part of the creative &/or presentation process of their art. This includes:

  • digital illustration
  • digital animation
  • digital imagery (EXCEPT digitally-edited photos unless part of a larger body of work)
  • digital painting
  • fractal art, pixel art
  • motion graphics
  • algorithm-generated evolutionary art.

Entry Dates: February 22nd & 23rd, 2019. Entries should be brought to the Harlin Museum between 12 pm – 4 pm on either day.

Entry Fees: $10.00 for 1, $15.00 for 2, $20.00 for 3, & $25.00 for 4; you may enter a 5th piece for free.

Guidelines: Entries will be separated into 1 of 2 categories (Still Art or Animated Art), and submissions must be either in print (Still Art) or in a system-compatible digital format (Windows) via external drive or email (Animated Art) to v.martin@harlinmuseum.com. All submissions must be the original work of the artist entering and must not have been previously exhibited at the Harlin Museum.

Awards: Prizes will be awarded at the Awards Reception on the show’s closing day, which is Sunday, March 24th at 2 pm. There will also be an Artist’s Meet & Greet the same day with refreshments served from 1pm-3pm, after which, all artwork will be released for pick up. Prizes will be awarded in each category out to 3rd place, with the Best of Show honoree winning $100.00, and then the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners will receive $75.00, $50.00, & $25.00 respectively.

Sales Commissions: Artists may offer their artwork for sale for the duration of the show. The museum receives a 20% commission on all sales made during this time; the artist receives the other 80%. All entry fees, sales commissions, and donation proceeds go to the maintenance and renovation of the Harlin Museum and the support of its many arts programs. The museum is supported entirely by community donations and volunteer staff and its programs are organized by the Harlin Museum Board.

WORKSHOP: Woodcarving Basics with Russ Biros @ Harlin Museum - Hathcock Gallery; 405 Worcester Lower Level
Feb 23 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

This wood carving workshop’s emphasis will be:

  • instruction on the tools and supplies needed to carve in wood and how to safely use them and maintain them 
  • demonstrating how to design, plan, and carve a simple object out of wood  

INSTRUCTOR:  Russ Biros, a woodcarving artist & teacher for over 30 years, juried by the Best of Missouri Hands, a Spring Creek juried artist, a Vesterheim Museum Gold Medalist, and a member of Arts Rolla, Current River Artists, & Lake of the Ozarks Woodcarvers

COST:  $40.00 per person (all material will be provided)

SUPPLIES:: All tools and materials needed for a small wood carving will be provided. Students may bring and use their own tools if they prefer.

Students may also bring a bag lunch or snacks as desired; drinking water will be provided.

Artist Meet & Greet/Awards Reception: Join your fellow artists — along with their family, friends, and art-loving fans — for one last look at this show’s unique and wonderful pieces before the Awards Reception at 2 pm; place ribbons and prizes will be handed out to artists in attendance and the winner of the yellow ribbon for the People’s Choice Award will be announced.

Art will be released and ready for pickup by 3 pm; all art not retrieved on Sunday will be available for artists/buyers to pick up during regular business the following week.
