WORKSHOP: Crayon Encaustics w/ Ron McGarry @ Harlin Museum - Hathcock Gallery, Lower Level

This will be a basic class on crayon encaustic painting. The student will accomplish several smaller subjects for practice to learn the technique and feel of crayon encaustic painting before accomplishing a larger simple project. This class will get you started into rediscovering the old art medium of crayon and taking it into the 21st century of painting bright amazing works of art that are being shown in galleries and museum all over the world.

Crayon Encaustic painting is the process of heating your wax crayons to create the artwork. The crayons are melted and transferred to paper. Ron’s encaustic work is a celebration of the alchemy of transforming common crayon wax into unique artistic works.

Crayon encaustics can be fun and challenging; an original art form with a unique effect that makes your piece of work enjoyable with a full range of artistic styles; it can be anything from an abstract vision to a realistic image.

Cost: $20; fee may be paid upon arrival. Check or cash only.

Supplies:
Basic Box of Crayola Crayons
Hot Glue Gun
Pencil
Eraser
Bring images of fruit, fish, flowers, landscapes or sky-scapes or any full-color images to work from.

The rest of the materials for the class will be provided.

Bring a snack if so desired; water will be provided.

Please register to attend ASAP for set-up and planning; the classroom can only hold 12 people for this workshop.

WORKSHOP-Art Presentation with Gladys Morris @ Harlin Museum of West Plains

This Art Presentation Workshop’s emphasis will be taking pride in framing and presenting your artwork—not only for your wall at home; but for entry into art shows or for display in galleries.

The tools, materials, and resources that are available and necessary will be covered for “do it yourself” framing as well as how to plan and choose the right materials for framing your art. It will provide helpful tips for beginner artists to have on framing as well as information on presentation as a part of your artwork planning process.

VENUE:  Harlin Museum Classroom Space.

LUNCH/REFRESHMENTS: Drinking water will be provided; you may bring a lunch or snacks as desired.

INSTRUCTOR:  Gladys Morris

WORKSHOP HOURS:  12 noon to 3 pm

SUBJECT:  Art presentation and framing techniques for the “do-it-yourselfer” 

COST:  $15.00 per person (all material will be provided)

SUPPLIES:  All supplies for this workshop will be provided. Students should bring paper & pen for taking additional notes. Reference handouts will be supplied for future use.

WORKSHOP: Basics of Crocheting w/ Angela Bullard @ Harlin Museum - Classroom Space, Lower Level

This crocheting workshop’s emphasis will be on:

  • learning the basic crocheting vocabulary
  • how to read a crochet pattern
  • how to properly hold the thread/yarn and crochet hook   

Each student will be making a scarf during the demonstration and will receive one-on-one instruction as needed.

VENUE:  Harlin Museum Classroom Space.

LUNCH/REFRESHMENTS: Drinking water will be provided; you may bring lunch or snacks as desired

WORKSHOP HOURS:  12 noon to 4 pm

SUBJECT:  Learning the basic crocheting stitches while making scarf.

COST:  $20.00 per person

REQUIRED SUPPLIES:

Students are responsible for providing their own supplies. You will need:

  1. skein of medium weight yarn
  2. size K crochet hook
  3. pair of scissors
  4. pen and paper for taking notes

WORKSHOP: Advanced Tunisian-Style Crochet w/ Angela Bullard @ Harlin Museum - Lower Level, Classroom Space

Open to anyone that has knowledge and experience in crocheting. 

This crocheting workshop’s emphasis will be on learning the basic Tunisian-style of crocheting. This type of crocheting is one that holds multiple loops on the hook in a style similar to that of knitting.  It differs from knitting, however, in that it uses a crochet hook rather than knitting needles.

Each student will complete in the course of this workshop a pot holder that can be used at home or given as a gift.

VENUE:  Harlin Museum Classroom Space

LUNCH/REFRESHMENTS: Drinking water will be provided; you may bring lunch or snacks as desired

Nature journaling (sketchbook journaling) is recording the natural world in its own environment; sketching in detail and recording information about plants, animals, mountains and landscapes, to use as a reference or cannot be captured in detail by a camera. This workshop’s emphasis will be on learning how to look closely at nature while observing with a keen eye and recording what you see in detail.  

VENUE:  Harlin Museum, Lower Level Classroom Space / Galloway Park

LUNCH/REFRESHMENTS: Drinking water will be provided in the classroom; you may choose to bring your own lunch or snacks for either portion of the workshop.

Sharpies, various colored markers or colored ink pens

Sketchbook

Watercolors & brushes

Misc light colored paper of various qualities

Clean sponges to cut

Water jar with lid

Paper towels

Small Paint Palette
