Beginning at noon on December 5th, 2019, the Harlin Museum’s Railways of the Ozarks exhibit will open to the public with its featured display of a full gallery seasonally-themed model train village, courtesy of the West Plains Model Railroad Club, along with a display about the rise & fall of the railroad in West Plains & the surrounding communities of the Ozarks.

The historical portion of this exhibit will include railroad maps, photographs of steam engines and the local train depots, artifacts of significance to the railroad in the Ozarks, and lots of interesting knowledge about how its influence has shaped the community that we live in today. The entire museum will be decorated for the holidays during this exhibit with seasonal art pieces, including a collection of Currier & Ives prints on loan to the museum from a private collection, and other prints and paintings from the museum’s permanent art collection that depict, were inspired by, or are otherwise related to the railroad, the holidays, or winter, which will all be displayed on the walls of Hathcock Gallery alongside Christmas Trees, strings of lights, and other winter holiday decorations.

All are welcome to visit the museum and take in the show; Railways of the Ozarks is kid-friendly and admission to the exhibit is free. (However, it does also offer a great opportunity for caretakers to teach kids about the meaning of philanthropy and the true joy of the season of giving—by supporting the museum with a monetary donation. All donations are sincerely appreciated and will go toward the museum’s ongoing art preservation and historical artifact procurement projects.)

This is a memorable exhibit for all ages and inclinations–watch your child’s face light up with wonder & amazement at the magic of a miniature locomotive zipping past a frozen country pond full of ice skaters–also all in miniature!  A perfect daytime outing to entertain the family &/or friends that are visiting the Ozarks for the holidays.

The exhibit will be open from December 5th – 15th, during regular days and hours of operation (Thurs. & Fri., 12-6pm, Sat. & Sun., 12-4pm), and then it will be open every day (Sun. – Sat.), during regular operating hours, from December 19th to December 30th–with the exception of Christmas Day (Dec 25).

Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus will graciously be stopping by the Harlin Museum during the month of December to hear what your kids want for Christmas and to pose for photos with good boys & girls.  Dates TBA; please follow us on Facebook or Instagram for updates on the museum and our activities.
