In honor of Veteran’s Day 2019, the Harlin Museum will be hosting, Soldiers of the Ozarks: A Military Honors Exhibit, opening November 7th in the Hathcock Gallery.  The exhibit itself will feature military artifacts, historical photographs, and recounts of the regional effects and outcomes of war– with a special timeline focusing on the events of WWI to honor the more than 100 years since the German surrender signaled the end of the war on November 11, 1918.

To be included are original panoramic photographs of local regiments that would go on to serve in WWI from the museum’s historical artifact collection.  As many of the soldiers in these photos are unidentified, the museum is asking the public to please stop in and help identify any and all soldiers that they may recognize in the photos as some are last known images of the young men before they went off to war—some, never to return.

The Harlin Museum Board is also sponsoring an essay contest for ages 6 and up to honor the lives and stories of those in service. Each essay must pertain, in some way, to military service, with the purpose of the project being to record the experiences, both good and bad—in conflict and peacetime, of our country’s servicemen and women. Each category’s top selection will win a cash prize and all essays will be recorded and kept as part of the museum’s permanent collection of military history. The essay entry form can be found on the museum website at https://harlinmuseum.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Veterans-Essay-Form.pdf.or can be picked up at the museum’s front desk during regular hours of operation. The due date for essay entries is November 16th, 2019.

If you have an interesting service story to share or a military artifact that you would like to donate to the museum for historical preservation, please email the Museum Desk at or call (417) 256-7801 for assistance. The exhibit will be on display through December 1st.
